Once again, I’m going to talk about Michael Hague and Christopher Vogler’s The Hero’s 2 Journeys. Specifically, the character known as the mentor archetype. The various characters found in different sources of media and literature works attribute similar characteristics to fully present the archetypal character of mentorship. Archetype 1: The Traditional Mentor The traditional mentor is defined by a “formal, dynamic and reciprocal relationship in a work environment between themselves and a novice (mentee) aimed at promoting the career growth of both.” 1 (p17) Traditional mentoring usually takes the form of frequent hour-long meetings in which mentors provide feedback on papers, projects, scholarship, and career milestones. People rarely explain what a good mentor looks like, much less how to go about spotting one. So, I thought I’d write about it. Without fail, my mentors have fit into what I’ve come to call my “5 On to Michael Hauge who calls the mentor archetype the Reflection Character. The reflection character is the sidekick character. They help the hero achieve their outer goals, by attempting to get the hero to step up to the plate and face their fears.
